Srinagar, Oct 15 (KNO): Ladakh’s traditional Pashmina, handwoven textiles and indigenous handicrafts are being showcased at Lakme Fashion Week in New Delhi, with designers from the region set to present their collections on October 18. In a statement issued to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), a spokesperson said a dedicated stall featuring Pashmina shawls, traditional textiles, intricate embroidery and other indigenous handicrafts has been set up at the fashion event, being held from October 13 to 18 at The Taj, New Delhi. He said the showcase highlights the traditional craftsmanship of the Changthang community, whose pastoral life is closely linked to Changra goats that produce the fine Pashmina fibre. The herders have preserved this tradition across generations despite the harsh climatic conditions of the Changthang plateau, making Ladakh’s Pashmina an integral part of the region’s cultural heritage, the spokesperson said. He said the stall also features products made by local artisans, weavers, spinners and women entrepreneurs, tracing the journey of Pashmina from Changthang’s high-altitude pastures to finished products that blend traditional skills with contemporary designs. The spokesperson said designers from Ladakh will present their collections on the runway on Sunday, October 18, featuring Pashmina creations, traditional embroidery and contemporary interpretations of the region’s indigenous textiles. He said the participation also aims to highlight the contributions of Changthang herders, artisans, craftspeople and women-led Self-Help Groups, while expanding market access, promoting local enterprises and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities. The initiative reflects the efforts of the UT Administration and the Department of Industries and Commerce under the Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP) scheme to strengthen Ladakh’s handicrafts and handloom sector, support artisans and self-help groups, upgrade traditional skills and improve market visibility for locally made products, he added. The spokesperson said the showcase seeks to connect Ladakh’s traditional craftsmanship with the wider fashion industry while preserving its cultural heritage and creating new avenues for growth.—(KNO)
